Sporty Good Times

On Sunday, since the weather was a bit nicer than it had been the past couple weeks, Michelle and I decided that it would be a fine time to get outside for summertime sports.

Michelle has asked me to teach her how to play a number of sports since we’ve been going out. We’ve been to quite a few sporting events, but haven’t had as much time to play them ourselves. Sunday would be our day to tackle baseball.

We started out at Fleet Farm, where they have a very good inventory of lower-cost sporting equipment every season. Other than going to a higher-end sports outlet of some sort, it’s probably the best selection of baseball gloves you’re going to find in town. Michelle was lucky enough to find a pink and gray glove that was comfortable and affordable.

After the quick shopping trip, we loaded up the dog and the other equipment in the car and headed over to Menominee Park, where they have a lot of green space and a couple ball diamonds.

The first thing we did was to stand pretty close together and toss the ball just to get used to using a glove to catch. It wasn’t long before we were ready to practice throwing.

I imagine that one of the reasons we usually teach kids how to play sports at a relatively young age is that they able to learn and adapt physically pretty quickly. Michelle did a good job catching and throwing, but like anything you want to learn, it’s going to take practice. We went over the mechanics of throwing a baseball, and I recommended that, rather than worry about accuracy and distance when throwing, she should concentrate first of all on the motions. Like I said, overall it was a pretty good game of catch.

Did I mention we were throwing a softball? Yeah, it was a softball. I figured, bigger target to grab hold of…

We moved on to batting after that. She did a really good job swinging the bat. Once she started focusing on watching the ball and swinging all the way through, she made a lot of contact. And I’m not a very good pitcher. I had a bag of a dozen balls, and I think I pitched her maybe 5 or 6 bags.

We also did a little fielding, but the results there were mixed. I hit while Michelle tracked ’em down. My control of ball placement could use improvement. I hit quite a few on the ground, and she routinely got in front of them. The ones in the air I usually hit too hard or too far. I guess we could’ve done “infield” and then “outfield” drills, but maybe another time.

Anyway, when we were done, I thought a little about how it’s a drag you can’t really just play a “pick-up game” of baseball with people. It’s not like football, where even though a standard team is pretty big, you can modify the rules and get by with less. You need all those people on a baseball team covering all those positions for a reason.

My initial gut instinct is that it might be fun to play in a softball league, but then I think about how it would probably be just like basketball season, and then I change my mind.

All in all, we had a good time.

I'll Give You Some Blarney– In the Face

I can’t believe I didn’t blog ANYTHING on Friday, given that I had a very slow work day and a lot cooking for the weekend. Ah, what the hell, tho– here’s a little recap…

Friday night, Michelle, Jen, Christy and I took Grandma out for dinner at The Packing House. They have a fine southside fish fry over there, and we all enjoyed it. After dinner, we hung out with at Grandma’s house a while playing 31. Jen won once, and Grandma won the other. I had some of the worst 31 hands of my life and got knocked out very quickly both times.

On Saturday, I got up (relatively) early and after breakfast and coffee, met Jen, Joe, Raul and Katie at Mo’s Irish Pub on Wisconsin & Plankington. They had been out since 7:30 at Murph’s, where they were alleged to have Lucky Charms for those early-morning St. Patty’s patrons. I enjoyed my first Guinness of the day at around 11, as can be seen in this photo. There is also a short video on Joe’s phone of my 2nd Guinness of the day, which I finished in 15 seconds (sometimes I amaze even myself).

I couldn’t stay out too long with the revelers, because I had to meet Michelle at Miller Park around 3 for a Guardian Credit Union meet-n-greet with Gorman Thomas. That was pretty cool, but I didn’t have much of a chance to talk with him– there was still a long line of people with stuff to get signed behind me. I did get my bobblehead autographed. I milled around the store downstairs for a bit waiting for Michelle to be done “working” at the event. I think we were out of there around 10 to 4. I wonder how much Gorman gets paid for an event like that?

After we were done at the ballpark, we shuttled Jen and Joe back to Mo’s and had a drink with them. I was a little perturbed that we had to pay a $5 cover to get in there. It was EXTREMELY crowded, and there were a lot of old people looking a little annoyed about the service and the breathing room, but what do you expect when 3/17 falls on a Saturday?

We made it to Erika and Patrick’s house by 6 and had a really good time with an authentic Irish dinner and a good game of Sheepshead. We thought we would need to leave earlier to meet some of Michelle’s peeps out for the ‘holiday,’ but never got the call we were expecting…

Michelle had her car parked over at Jen & Joe’s house Saturday night, so we just crashed there and eventually made it back to Oshkosh on Sunday afternoon, following a late brunch at the Original Pancake House. Michael Redd was nowhere to be seen on this visit…

I was a little bummed as I listened to the Badgers game on the trip home– enough so that I had to switch over to the Brewers when Bucky was down by 7 with about 3 minutes to go. It was a nice season, but too bad to see it end so quickly.

Speaking of basketball, my team has its first “playoff game” this evening at 6:15. My understanding is that we, being the #5 team in the league, play the #4 team for a chance to meet #1 next week. For the first time this morning, that didn’t make a lot of sense to me– seems more like we should be playing the #2 team, and the #4 should play #3. But I guess that would mean you’d have to ‘re-seed’ after the first round, and… well, who gives a crap, really?

How was your weekend?

Snow Covered, Etc.

The weekend, considering the weather and stuff, turned out as well as could be expected.

On Saturday morning, I got up at my regular time so that I’d be ready for movin’ fun w/ the Knitts when they called. Snow removal pushed the excitement back to around 10am, after I stopped off at the U-Haul joint on Ohio & Witzel for a few extra boxes.

Joe and April had plenty of help, and a lot of stuff already loaded up, so the moving itself didn’t take too long. I’d say the biggest pain of all was removing a few doors in order to get furniture in and out of houses. I definitely favor moving into a house over an apartment, big reason being the shorter trip from the truck to the door. Hiking up and down a lot of stairs with armloads of stuff sucks.

There is a not-too-flattering photo of Joe and April in their living room at the end of our Saturday on my Flickr page, and I took a couple more pics around the house, too.

It’s a nice little old house. Apparently, the previous occupant had been there for a very long time, and it was in need of some significant renovations. At this point, though, there is fresh paint on all the walls, new carpeting on the floors, and some new windows, too. The only other work it desperately needs is a coat of paint on the outside, and that’s going to be tackled once the weather warms up.

Saturday evening, Michelle was due to show up around 5:30, 6-ish, and we were going to go to Dave Schrubbe’s birthday grand re-opening of DHI. We ate at about 7, and then Michelle needed to finish up some other stuff online before we went over. I don’t even really remember what we were watching on TV or whatever, but it was around 8pm that I just curled up on the couch and fell asleep, basically for the rest of the night.

I felt bad about missing Dave’s shindig and disappointing Michelle with a boring evening, but I guess I was just wiped out after the moving day. *That* realization also made me feel like a tool, because it wasn’t as if we busted our humps for hours upon hours on Saturday– I got to Joe & April’s at 10, and we were done with everything by 3:30. *Shrugs*

I guess I just suck.

On Sunday, Michelle and I did make it to Sheboygan for her Grandma’s 92nd birthday. I was pretty nervous about the weather before we left, but it turned out to be not that big of a deal; it was crappy when we were leaving from there, and we had to drive pretty slow between Sheboygan and Fond du Lac, but otherwise didn’t have any problems.

I was glad we went. I got to meet another one of Michelle’s aunts and her Uncle Larry, and Grandma was looking & feeling lots better than the last time we saw her (she was in the nursing home for a week or so when she came down with the flu earlier this winter). We also watched some old home movies that had been dubbed over to VHS. It was neat.

You’ve probably heard about or experienced the weekend’s snowfall. It’s actually really warm today (34), and the snow is just a mess. I had a wet, treacherous walk to and from work once already today, and if it freezes a little bit later, I expect more of the same.

Tonight after work I have to go the WI Review office and help with the choosing of pieces for the spring issue. Basketball tonight is at 8:15.

I think we have something like 3 games left. Could be a couple more depending on the “playoff” situation. I’ve had a pretty good time playing basketball, but I don’t expect that I’ll do it again next year. It’s been a little frustrating that we never have time to practice (we only show up for the games), and my weekly basketball nightmares, while silly, are pretty annoying. Long story short, it seems like too much anxiety and stress for something that is supposed to be a good time.

Thinking about this sort of thing makes me worry that I’ll be a bad “sports dad” at some point in the future– I won’t have the skills to teach kids sports, and who knows if I’ll have the right sort of attitude to be a good spectator at their events.

I wonder if other people who don’t have kids (or even a spouse) worry about crap like this.

Early to Bed, and All That Sorta Crap

I was reading a post from Lifehacker this morning, and while some of the linked tips therein have a greater application to people who are a lot busier during their days than I generally am, the idea of getting up early and having a productive morning made me think back to living in Bozeman.

Particularly in the spring of that year, even though I had no job and no place to be other than class twice a week in the evening, I tried very hard to get myself to bed at 10 every night, and I got up around 5 every morning. I remember feeling really good about waking up, and there’s no doubt that I felt more creative and productive when I got a jump on things.

I’m thinking that I might have time for more interesting blogging first thing in the AM (shrugs). It’s worth a shot anyway, so I’ll try to keep you up to date and let you know how it goes…

Couple Misc. Notes:
– Super Bowl was pretty lame. It was interesting through the first half, but the Bears D really wore down as the game went on (prolly had something to do with the fact the offense couldn’t stay on the field– I’m looking at you, Rex). Joe and April came over, though, and we had Randy Balls, pizza, and grilled cheese sam’iches.
– I helped Michelle file her taxes, but I screwed something up and she’s actually due another 160 bucks or so. We’ll have to put through an amendment.
– Michelle really likes the idea of being able to easily share you camera-phone pics on the web, so she set herself up a Flickr acct yesterday, too. Only a couple pics so far, but watch for more: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stuck2thefloor
