Everything's Coming Up Milhouse!

What a wonderful synergy of delivers at my home and work today– I made a rare midday run back to my apartment, where I found that my SATA cables had arrived by mail.  The FedEx doortag that I was hoping to see wasn’t there yet, but things got even better very quickly: I was in the house about five minutes, making a sandwich, when the doorbell rang and the dude dropped off my replacement phone.

At work, the UPS guy dropped off my new harddrive and video card to get the TV box rokkin once again– I am looking forward to being able to watch my Internetty TV on a normal-sized television.  From the couch.  It WILL ROCK.

Fifteen minutes to go…

A Vision of The FUTURE

I guess somebody at Microsoft has seen Minority Report.  Because apparently that is their vision of computers in our future– no keyboards or nuthin’

Just for comparison’s sake:

Personally, I have a lot more interest in those self-driving cars.

Utterly Alone

I am either an idiot, or the only one on the planet who likes to browse his music collection thusly:

I have a number of compilation albums; soundtracks, Billboard discs, and whatnot.  Often, I don’t know the names of all the groups/artists on these, and I don’t think of them in that way at all: if I want to listen to the soundtrack from Get Shorty, I don’t think about the fact that it features tracks from Morphine, Us3, Booker T & the MG’s, or John Lurie.  It’s just the Get Shorty soundtrack.  If I saw John Lurie’s name in a list of all the “Artists” in my collection, I would say to myself, “Who the hell is John Lurie?”

Yet, every music collection manager I have tried (including Amarok 2, I should mention) lists EVERY ARTIST ON EVERY COMPILATION INDIVIDUALLY by default.  So, in the case of one ‘Greyboy’ (what, you didn’t know that was another artist that played on Get Shorty????), I would have an entry under ‘G’ in ‘Artists’ that would list just one song.  Completely useless.  This style of listing the artists is particularly frustrating with all my 80s compilations.  Yes, I can wrap my head around the fact that, in a literal sense, the collection features all of these individually named artists.  I cannot, however, wrap my head around how a listing like that could possibly be useful to anyone.

The screenshot above is from Amarok 1.4.  After rolling with version 2 for a short period of time, I rolled back, in part because of this frustrating issue.  Obviously, it IS indeed possible for a music player to group the albums with ‘various artists’ in this manner, or my beloved Amarok 1 wouldn’t be doing it.

Tell me something: I am crazy to hold this opinion?  I just want the compilations in their own category.  How do YOU deal with this?  Am I missing something in every other music player that I have ever tried that skirts this issue entirely?

I guess what really makes it frustrating is that I can’t seem to find the ultimate player that has all the features that I want– Amarok 1 groups the compilations right, but it’s album shuffle is woefully lacking.  A-2 is great with album shuffle, but the collection arrangement is bullshit.  Jajuk handles album shuffle even better, but is aesthetically atrocious.  Songbird and Rhythmbox both look OK, but I can’t get them to shuffle albums OR display compilations in a helpful way.

I should go get myself some more significant problems.

Weathered the Weather

The weekend didn’t quite turn out as we planned, thanks in part to Saturday’s snow storm.  We made it to Sunburst on Friday evening (a day early, as it turned out), and had a good time skiing for a few hours.  It’s not a bad little hill they’ve got up there, although we could tell on Friday that most of the snow was man-made.  Jason Hill said that he had a successful evening of remembering HOW to ski, too, so the trip served its purpose.  Now if only we can get enough people together to go up to Rib Mountain next month…

Saturday morning, we were greeted by a blanket of fresh snow that we hadn’t quite been expecting; I read the forecast the night before, and didn’t quite realize that the storm would be lasting through most of the day.  Consequently, Michelle and I had to cancel our plans to head up to Oshkosh for Dave’s birthday celebration.  Fortunately, he is going to be in town on Tuesday (actual day of birth), and we’re planning to meet up with him and his brother for dinner.

Michelle was tentatively planning to go in to work to make up a few hours that she missed earlier in the week because of a class, and I met up with some friends for the Lakefront Brewery tour.  A handful of new pictures in the Milwaukee gallery are from that excursion.  Later that night, Michelle and I stayed in and got a nice specialty pizza from Pizza Shuttle.

On Sunday, I was at Pulaski High School for a few hours for College Goal Sunday.  The event was a success, but it wasn’t the best-organized thing I’ve ever participated in.  I ended up spending about three and a half hours of my day there, where I was only productive for about 90 minutes or so.  I guess that’s one of the things you put up with when the whole thing is done on a volunteer basis…

Had to do some laundry to get ready for the work week; right now, I’m thinking of getting to bed by 10 so I can be good and rested when the alarm goes off at 5:15.  These weekends sure cruise by in a hurry.

Is It Too Late for Anyone to Take Anything Back?

I stumbled across this link to The Consumerist’s post about Facebook’s revised terms of service earlier this evening, and I also read a few of the responses to it, and the responses to those responses.  Suffice it to say, even though they claim they would never do anything to hurt you, the loyal user, I am glad that I have never “uploaded” anything to Facebook.

The question that this fiasco raises for me is this: are we COMPLETELY deluding ourselves to think that there is any information left out there that we can share with nearly anyone, in nearly any capacity, that is also still somehow under our control?  With the possible exception of information you share with your lawyer or with a medical professional, what hope could you possibly have?

The fact is, creating a profile about yourself, the things you like, things you do, and places you go, but also desiring anonymity are mutually exclusive ideas.  You can’t have both, and you sort of need to get over that.  While I have railed against the Facebook in the past, I don’t begrudge the people that are on it.  But as a user, you have to know that you have not only ticked a checkbox to an agreement that you never actually read; you have also signed a social contract that says, “OK, world– I don’t have much to hide.  You’re going to find certain things out, and I’ll have to deal with the consequences.”

Every one of us who has talked on a cell phone, or filled out a survey, or used any sort of web-based service has given something up.  We’ve passed the point of thinking we can get it back.  If that makes comfortable, it’s a life lesson; but that person is no victim.  Make no mistake; the world is shrinking.  There is less you can keep hidden all the time, and so if that’s what you really want, be diligent about it.  But if you sign up for a FREE service whose goal is to CONNECT PEOPLE WITH ONE ANOTHER, then you are surrendering some of those rights to complain.

Sometimes I teeter on the edge of saying “to hell with it, just take all the data and information that I have, there’s no way I can protect it.”  But another part of me wants to toil in the face of futility, and that part takes comfort in the fact that I could unplug my server tomorrow.

Successful V-Day

Michelle and I had a nice weekend up north.  We left MKE around 6:30 on Friday night to head up to Eagle River.  We stayed at Mom & Dad’s house, and then left for Indianhead to go skiing the next morning.  We almost considered a couple other hills, because we realized kind of late that there was no night skiing at Indianhead.  We were glad we still went for the 12-4 afternoon.

Granted, I still have enough fingers to count the total number of times I’ve been downhill skiing EVER, but these were definitely the best conditions I’ve seen yet; there was fresh powder from the night before, and it snowed most of the afternoon, so all the runs were in great shape.  Indianhead is pretty big, as Northwoods skiing goes, and so there was plenty of variety.  It was cool to take some runs that lasted more than a minute, too.

At one point, we made our way over to the pair of double-black runs.  Michelle tried to explain to me that a good way to control your speed on this one would be to make wide, criss-crossing turns on the way down.  That might have worked if there wasn’t 3 inches of fresh new snow on the top.  Neither one of us had a successful run down that one; we might as well have just popped our skis off at the top, thrown them down, and went summersaulting after.  Later at dinner, I told Michelle that when she wiped out, it was like when Charlie Brown gets knocked out of his clothes by a screaming line drive.

We ended up staying in Ironwood, but drove back to the resort for dinner.  Very nice and not very expensive at all.  We enjoyed perusing the placemats, which were laminated 60s-era brochures from the hill.  Funny to think about (a) riding up to Ironwood by train, and (b) paying $4 a day for renting wooden skis.

The only bad part of the weekend is that I was feeling pretty sick by Sunday.  We made more than one stop trying to find a combination of meds that was going to work for me.  Ended up getting some decongestant that works pretty well, but Michelle did all the driving home on Sunday, and I stayed home from work today anyway.

If you’re off work today, enjoy the Presidents’ Day!  And if you’re not, then remember you had off for MLK Day last month.  Err, wait you didn’t..?

What Are You Doing In the House??

If you are living in WI, go the hell outside– it is a beautiful weekend!  I have things to do around this place, but I am heading out shortly to take some photos this afternoon.  I haven’t tried photographing the outdoors in (relatively) yucky-looking winter weather, but it’s worth a shot.  I also want to get some practice in with my new camera, so however I can make that happen will be cool.

Speaking of which, I decided I’m going to switch over to Picasa 3– its cross-platformy goodness and a little studying of its key features made it seem a lot more usable to me.  One thing, though: does anybody know how to make it display all pics in the collection by date, and just ignore the folders that they’re in?

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday…

Twinkies Photos

Howdy… in case you were wondering, I expanded the TwinCities photo gallery this morning with 26 more shots from Michelle’s camera.  She took a whole bunch of pics from our karaoke night at LaFonda, so if you’re interested, take a look…

There are also a few from the hockey game and the Depot.

Any big plans for the weekend?  I’m gonna watch the PRO BOWL!!!

No, I’m actually not.

Fun With Fonts

Like 20 thousand other Lifehacker readers, I picked up on this post a couple days ago that mentioned a website where you could generate your own hand-written fonts FOR FREE.  It took about 2 and a half days for the traffic to settle down, but early this morning, I was able to get in there and scan in a few different “Bocko” fonts.  The timing on the post was funny, because I had asked Michelle just a day or two before if she knew how to design one’s own font; I have a couple projects on which I’d like to use my own digital handwriting…

Anyway, I was really impressed with how they turned out.  I even changed a few default fonts on my system to use my new handwritten ones instead; we’ll see how long that lasts before it gets too annoying for words (I have a feeling that the first time someone else comes over to the house and sits down at the computer, we’ll need to switch back to something else.  But I can read these JUST fine…).

On the geeky-website-news front, I was excited to see that there should be a bug-fixing version of WordPress due out soon.  I took a look at the list of tickets that have been closed on version 2.7.1, and it seems like a couple of my plugin problems might get fixed.  I’m anxious because there are a couple new features in the next version I’d like to be able to implement here on the site.  I don’t think I’m going to bother testing the beta, but as soon as there is an official x.x.1 release, I’ll be on it.

On the geeky-television-news front, Jen figures that Sylar’s dad is invisible.  In more ways than one, Jen, in more ways than one…

On the sisters’-bithdays front, Christy is 26 today!!  I talked to her yesterday and mentioned that it’s time to start that next quarter-century– no lookin back now; next stop: 30!  Happy b-day, Kid.

Time to head out to work– have a fabulous Wednesday.

It Was a Nice Weekend

Had a time overall this past weekend– on Friday, I went out for a couple drinks with some people from work at Bar Louie, in the Bayshore mall.  Kyle met me there just before 7 and picked me up to drive back toward my place and hang out.  Good to see the K-Man; Michelle and I agreed that it will be nice when Robin comes out of hiding in the future, too…  😛

We decided to have a couple beers at the American Legion post 331, just across Wilson Ave from my house.  Ever since I moved to Shorewood, Michelle and I have been talking (partly tongue-in-cheek) about dropping in there for the fish fry on a Friday night.  When Kyle and I got there, there was still quite a bit of fish being slung, and the atmosphere did not disappoint.  We had pint-tappers of High Life for 2.50.  Not bad at all.  Michelle joined us a bit later, but by then, it was about time for everyone to head out and get some sleep before our respective Saturdays.

Michelle had to get up even earlier than me (!!) in order to make it to Watertown for judging a cheer competition.  I just needed to be ready for Sarah & Brian to pick me up at around 12:30 for our trip to Fort Atkinson.  We were en route to Brad & Mindy’s place for a day out to bid farewell to Todd & Marcia; they are heading to Laos, where Marcia will be working on a project for her PhD.  They’re going to be gone for several months, so it was nice for everyone to get together for an evening out.  Photos from this event are in the Day to Day gallery ((Speaking of photos, I’ve uploaded some from our Twin Cities weekend, too; I only had a few, but they are in the TwinCities gallery)).

On Sunday, we made a quick shopping detour in Johnson Creek before making it back to Milwaukee.  We caught most of the Super Bowl (well, at least half of it) over at Chris/Bob/Justin’s place.  The second half of the game was pretty exciting!  I felt bad for Jason Hill, who was the only Steelers fan in the place.  Personally, I didn’t have a horse in that race, so I was rooting for some of friends who were watching (whoooo!!  Eat that lii’ smoky weiner!!!).

One thing I did discover over the balance of the weekend is that I will need more discipline in order to stick to a schedule on those off-days.  It’s hard to carve up your time the right way when you might go out and not know exactly when you’re getting in (or how late you’ll sleep).  I might just have to “power through” and do my best on those days…

Well, plenty to get done around here before the end of my short day; I have to leave work around 3:30 to head to Madison for a “Recruitment & Outreach” presentation.  Gonna be a late night, but I’m taking some This American Life with me, so I should be golden…
