Oh, the Frakkin Humanity.

Our office is in the midst of our annual “department training,” where we get together for 3 hours a day, 3 days a week for about a month to receive a daily lecture on ALLL the procedures for every job in the entire office.  Yes, even the ones that you’ll never have to do!  Sometimes, there is really good information shared about a change to a process, or a new program, but a lot of it is the regurgitation of things that we’ve all heard before.  It can get extremely boring.

We have reached that stage for this year.  Today’s training was the dullest yet, and I took the opportunity to compose a List of Countries That I Would Like to Visit, in no particular order (that is, the list is in no particular order; but actually, the sequence in which I visit these countries doesn’t make much different to me, either):

  1. Canada
  2. England
  3. Ireland
  4. Japan
  5. China
  6. Vietnam
  7. Australia
  8. India
  9. Brazil
  10. Cuba
  11. Czech Republic
  12. Poland
  13. Italy
  14. Spain
  15. France
  16. Germany
  17. Belgium
  18. Switzerland
  19. Morocco
  20. Algeria
  21. Greece
  22. Egypt
  23. Tunisia
  24. South Africa
  25. Russia
  26. United Arab Emirates

Is It Too Late for Anyone to Take Anything Back?

I stumbled across this link to The Consumerist’s post about Facebook’s revised terms of service earlier this evening, and I also read a few of the responses to it, and the responses to those responses.  Suffice it to say, even though they claim they would never do anything to hurt you, the loyal user, I am glad that I have never “uploaded” anything to Facebook.

The question that this fiasco raises for me is this: are we COMPLETELY deluding ourselves to think that there is any information left out there that we can share with nearly anyone, in nearly any capacity, that is also still somehow under our control?  With the possible exception of information you share with your lawyer or with a medical professional, what hope could you possibly have?

The fact is, creating a profile about yourself, the things you like, things you do, and places you go, but also desiring anonymity are mutually exclusive ideas.  You can’t have both, and you sort of need to get over that.  While I have railed against the Facebook in the past, I don’t begrudge the people that are on it.  But as a user, you have to know that you have not only ticked a checkbox to an agreement that you never actually read; you have also signed a social contract that says, “OK, world– I don’t have much to hide.  You’re going to find certain things out, and I’ll have to deal with the consequences.”

Every one of us who has talked on a cell phone, or filled out a survey, or used any sort of web-based service has given something up.  We’ve passed the point of thinking we can get it back.  If that makes comfortable, it’s a life lesson; but that person is no victim.  Make no mistake; the world is shrinking.  There is less you can keep hidden all the time, and so if that’s what you really want, be diligent about it.  But if you sign up for a FREE service whose goal is to CONNECT PEOPLE WITH ONE ANOTHER, then you are surrendering some of those rights to complain.

Sometimes I teeter on the edge of saying “to hell with it, just take all the data and information that I have, there’s no way I can protect it.”  But another part of me wants to toil in the face of futility, and that part takes comfort in the fact that I could unplug my server tomorrow.

Successful V-Day

Michelle and I had a nice weekend up north.  We left MKE around 6:30 on Friday night to head up to Eagle River.  We stayed at Mom & Dad’s house, and then left for Indianhead to go skiing the next morning.  We almost considered a couple other hills, because we realized kind of late that there was no night skiing at Indianhead.  We were glad we still went for the 12-4 afternoon.

Granted, I still have enough fingers to count the total number of times I’ve been downhill skiing EVER, but these were definitely the best conditions I’ve seen yet; there was fresh powder from the night before, and it snowed most of the afternoon, so all the runs were in great shape.  Indianhead is pretty big, as Northwoods skiing goes, and so there was plenty of variety.  It was cool to take some runs that lasted more than a minute, too.

At one point, we made our way over to the pair of double-black runs.  Michelle tried to explain to me that a good way to control your speed on this one would be to make wide, criss-crossing turns on the way down.  That might have worked if there wasn’t 3 inches of fresh new snow on the top.  Neither one of us had a successful run down that one; we might as well have just popped our skis off at the top, thrown them down, and went summersaulting after.  Later at dinner, I told Michelle that when she wiped out, it was like when Charlie Brown gets knocked out of his clothes by a screaming line drive.

We ended up staying in Ironwood, but drove back to the resort for dinner.  Very nice and not very expensive at all.  We enjoyed perusing the placemats, which were laminated 60s-era brochures from the hill.  Funny to think about (a) riding up to Ironwood by train, and (b) paying $4 a day for renting wooden skis.

The only bad part of the weekend is that I was feeling pretty sick by Sunday.  We made more than one stop trying to find a combination of meds that was going to work for me.  Ended up getting some decongestant that works pretty well, but Michelle did all the driving home on Sunday, and I stayed home from work today anyway.

If you’re off work today, enjoy the Presidents’ Day!  And if you’re not, then remember you had off for MLK Day last month.  Err, wait you didn’t..?

Down, But Not Out

I have caught a whiff of whatever illness befell Michelle earlier in the week.  I seem to have the symptoms under control with a steady dosage of generic Day-Quil every 4 hours.  I am not about to let a little cough and runny nose keep from going skiing on one of my last available weekends of the winter.

So, we are overcoming both weather and illness in order to persevere– rather than staying at home for a quick day trip to Cascade Mtn near Madison, we will be driving up to E.R. this evening, staying @ Mom & Dad’s, and then we’ll head up to Indianhead on Saturday.

I better get done packing before Michelle is out of work; enjoy your V-Day weekend, however you choose to spend it!

Top Notch For All Parties

Michelle and I DID end up making it to the Bucks game this evening– she was pretty sick and didn’t go into work this morning, but the drugs she got from the doctor were kicking in by the time the game rolled around, so we decided not to waste them.

I haven’t been shy about bad-mouthing the Bucks in this forum for the last couple seasons.  If Michelle was not a huge fan of TJ Ford (from his days in Milwaukee), I most likely would not have bothered with a game this season.  This is definitely a different group than the last time I watched them, though (back in December of 2006).  I was impressed with the hustle and the apparent effort at the defensive end of the floor.  Granted, on this particular evening, they were shooting anywhere from 53-57% throughout the game, so there was a lot of incentive to get after the ball and keep things rolling.  But yeah; I’ll admit, I was impressed.

Meanwhile, I took along my camera, attached the telephoto lens, put it on continuous-shooting mode and ended up with about 750 images to download– yikes.  Bed time; be back tomorrow…

It's Just About Time

While Jim is sad about the lack of exciting sports-goings-on at this time of year, I am delighted to look ahead to baseball season.  Tom Haudricourt, from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, posted a blog with a link to Baseball Prospectus’s 2009 predictions earlier today…

They mathematically project a team’s record by tallying up individual player projections for the year.  They have the Brewers finishing with a winning record, but missing the playoffs.  It’ll be interesting to come back here in 7 months and see what actually happened!

What Are You Doing In the House??

If you are living in WI, go the hell outside– it is a beautiful weekend!  I have things to do around this place, but I am heading out shortly to take some photos this afternoon.  I haven’t tried photographing the outdoors in (relatively) yucky-looking winter weather, but it’s worth a shot.  I also want to get some practice in with my new camera, so however I can make that happen will be cool.

Speaking of which, I decided I’m going to switch over to Picasa 3– its cross-platformy goodness and a little studying of its key features made it seem a lot more usable to me.  One thing, though: does anybody know how to make it display all pics in the collection by date, and just ignore the folders that they’re in?

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday…

(Partially) Swearing Off DVD

At some point during this week (not sure when, the days and mornings are sort of starting to blend together), I ended up on Amazon browsing at CDs and DVDs.  With so many of my friends and fam now making the jump to BluRay, I realized– maybe I ought to quit buying DVDs (for now) altogether.

Jen agreed that for those films where outstanding picture clarity and sound truly add to the experience, that’s a good idea (your special effects extraveganzas, etc.), but for certain other movies or TV (like The Mosquito Coast, for example, which I’ve got coming next week), it’s probably not vital.  I decided I won’t be collecting any more seasons of Heroes until I’m rockin the BluRay, and ditto for BSG.  There’s just not much point when you know that you’re not getting the best that the current tech has to offer, right?

One point I will not waver on, though, is this: I absolutely refuse to put one more goddamned dime in George frakkin Lucas’s oversized pockets.  I’ve bought your son-of-a-bitchin trilogy 6 times now, Georgey-boy, and that will be quite enough.  I don’t care if the BluRay edition comes with a coupon for a free, lifesize X-Wing fighter replica ((I DO care about that, and if that was the actual offer, I would be at the front of the line.)), I am done.

Meanwhile, speaking of DVDs, I really need to find a reasonably priced storage medium for discs.  Don’t like the clunky (and expensive) cases, so I’d like to get a book.  But what sort of storage capacity do I really need?  That’s the question.

Hey, since YOU went BluRay, which are your favorite movies so far?  Have you caught yourself licking the screen at any point?  That’s kinda gross, dude, but I understand.

Twinkies Photos

Howdy… in case you were wondering, I expanded the TwinCities photo gallery this morning with 26 more shots from Michelle’s camera.  She took a whole bunch of pics from our karaoke night at LaFonda, so if you’re interested, take a look…

There are also a few from the hockey game and the Depot.

Any big plans for the weekend?  I’m gonna watch the PRO BOWL!!!

No, I’m actually not.
