Working On a Coupla TwoThree Things

I had a breakthrough yesterday in realizing that I was sending posts via email is not that difficult.  I was just not completing the process.  I can now pull in those emails pretty quickly.

The ones that I’ve grabbed, though, don’t seem to display correctly once they’re here.  I get titles that reflect the subject line, but the body itself is always empty.  I’m going to head out to the forums next to take a look at that.

Why I am blogging at 12:40am, you ask?  Just couldn’t get to sleep.  I was lying awake in bed about an hour before I decided that I would grab the laptop and see if that would make me tired.  It only seems to have made me thirsty, which doesn’t make a lot of sense.

More or Less Like Butter

You probably didn’t notice unless you’ve registered (and you haven’t), but I upgraded the WordPress again today. Version 2.5 debuted over the weekend, and after taking a little time to figure out how, and consulting Mundschau on it, I finished everything up for upgrading this evening.

  1. Per Joe’s advice, I shut down the MySQL server, then copied the entire contents of the data folder for the site to my workstation.  Did the same with my WordPress base install.
  2. I seem to have an easier time un-zipping the new versions and then pushing them over to the server than doing a download straight TO the server.  So I went that route again.  Followed the instructions on WordPress.org very carefully, and everything seemed to go off without a hitch.
  3. My theme was broken when I first finished the upgrade.  I had to re-install it, but all the custom setups I had rokkin stuck around after the re-install.
  4. I had customized the login script so that you don’t have a to wait for an email with your initial password.  But that was messed up out of the box, too, so I’ll have to do that again.
  5. Tried to use the new “one-click-plugin-upgrade” feature that’s built in to this newest version of WordPress.  But that didn’t play very nice, either, cuz the script asked for my FTP credentials to the server– but Bocko don’t roll w/ no FTP, yo (SSH only up in this mofo).
  6. Speaking of which, the picture galleries are a little screwy right this moment, too (i.e., not present), but I know all the files are still there, so I’m sure it’ll just be a matter of updating the plugin.

Overall, I’m very satisfied with the ease of this upgrading operation.  Another piece of advice that Joe gave me that I’ll be trying my best to follow– learning how to backup my database with ‘mysqldump’ before it’s time for the next upgrade.

Also– update on my ISP problems: cable guy was here today, and without going into too much useless detail, seems like my speed problems are fixed.  Wordy was able to see the photos today at a reasonable speed, and isn’t that why we’re all here, anyway?  To make sure that Wordy’s time on the web is well-spent?  But yeah, I guess I’ll just keep an eye on it and hope for the best…

Off to fix my photo galleries!

Speed Bump

I thought that there may be some issues within this new site that really made it slow for some people.  But, after noticing the poor transfer rate I get from connecting to my house in a variety of ways, I decided a speed test for my Internet connection was in order.  The verdict: 25 Kbps upstream.  Ouch.

So when I get home later on, I’m going to reboot the modem (I don’t think I’ve had to do that at all since they hooked up the webs for me early last fall), and if that changes nothing (I don’t think it will), it’ll be time for a phone call to my friendly neighborhood Time Warner Customer Service rep.  Gotta hold off for the weekend on that one, because I’ve never experienced a hold time in this market (MKE) of less than 20 minutes.

That Was Unexpected

Well, maybe I shouldn’t even admit this, but I got into work this morning, and all of a sudden, soloshootsfirst.com was pointing at my new WordPress site. Wasn’t doing that night when I went to bed. Is now. *shrug*

So, err, welcome to the new version of the site. Yep.

……

Update your feeds.

**UPDATE**   Talked to Joe and learned something new about Apache and needing to restart it– which I had to do this morning for a completely different reason.  But at least I feel better about not being a total schmoe.  Carry on!

The Clock Is Running…

Very close to debuting the new site to the general public.  I started messing around w/ the Apache .conf file to update the locations of my virtual servers, but the behavior wasn’t exactly what I was expecting.  I’m still thinking it through, and I’m sure it’ll be figured out (with some help from Mundschau, no doubt).

I actually really messed it up when I thought I had the simple file updating done– fortunately, I wasn’t the first to so dick-up my wordpress site, and a much smarter person created a convenient solution.

Hardy Upgrade II

The initial upgrade to 8.04 broke my sound and my network card.  And I couldn’t use the mouse.  But I don’t know if that maybe just had something to do with the network hanging, trying like hell to get an IP.  The upgrade process itself went really smoothly, though.  Also, seemed as though the video driver wrinkles from 7.10 have been smoothed out.  So that’s nice.

What I may try to do, again, since I have the /home in its own space anyway, is do a clean install again of the rest of the system.  The biggest drawback is having to reinstall all your optional packages.  With APTtoCD, though, it’s (fairly) painless.

I’m not that interested in spending a whole mess of time on it, though.  It’s only a beta, after all, and the first one at that.  To be continued.

Hardy Upgrade

I decided that I would use this blog as a repository for my adventures in Ubunt-ing as well as all the normal day-to-day shit that makes up my existence.  That said, unless you give a shit about computers and geek-related stuff like that– nothin’ for you to see here…

I got an email last week that said Ubuntu 8.04 was now officially in beta, with a release due the latter half of next month.  I’m not really very good at being a tester or submitting info about bugs, but… ah, well.  After reading over the release notes for the beta,  there’s a lot of stuff worth getting a look at.

I couldn’t remember if I still had that second hard drive installed in my desktop machine or not.  Fortunately, I did create a separate partition for /home the last time I installed, so everything else is only running at about 4 gigs.  I was ready to do a backup to DVD, but it turned out that second drive IS in there.  Just made a copy of the partition in GParted, and then started up the graphical upgrade tool in Gutsy.  Still downloading all the new packages right now, but I’ll have more to say about the switchover soon…

Remembering Why We're Here

I started thinking about changing the software that drives the blog back in the late part of summer. I can’t recall exactly what it was that made me start looking, but I do know that I landed on this wordpress option pretty quickly, but never had time to really take a good look at it. I want to be able to make an easy-to-follow list of things to accomplish with the blog, so I’ll know if it’s even worth it to switch.

Let’s start with what I want to do on the web and with the blog:

  1. Easily post to the blog anytime, anywhere. Before tikiwiki, I was using MS Publisher to create a site, and whenever I wanted to make changes, I was overwriting virtually every file and had to upload a “new version” of the site daily. I could really only work from home, where the site was saved and I had enough bandwidth to move it.
  2. Make it possible for people to interact with the blog, at a post-level, if they like. When I read stuff on the web, I usually don’t feel the need to comment on ti, but sometimes I do. If it’s a simple matter to do that, I will. If it’s a hassle, I say ‘screw it.’ If people want to say something back to me, I want it to be easy.
  3. Have room for more diverse content. I have pictures that I’d like people to be able to see. I have some old videos that should stay on the web. I have a few other things that may not fit into the format of a “blog”, but I want the site to be flexible enough to include them easily.
  4. Make it simple for people to read the blog in a syndicated format. I get the majority of my blog fix through RSS. If that’s how people want to read what I have to offer, it should be easy to subscribe.
  5. Make it look nice. If people come to the site, I’d like them to have a pleasant visual experience, plain and simple.

That’s a basic plan. Now, I should probably give a look at what the current soloshootsfirst site is doing, and evaluate how it’s helping me reach these five goals. I should be brutually honest, but also accommodating to its purpose and intended audience. Here goes:

  1. Meets Goal 1 very effectively. Anywhere I have access to the Internet, I can be writing a blog post. A couple minor complaints about the interface have been the less-than-outstanding performance of the authentication system (I always have to try to log in twice, and lately I can only do so through Internet Explorer, and everyone else has problems trying to log in), and the relative ease with which I’ve “blown away” entire blog posts because I accidentally hit a ‘back’ button or delete or something while I’m writing. Because of that, I’ve taken to drafting posts in a Notepad window, then copy/pasting to the blog itself.
  2. Meets Goal 2, albeit with difficulty. It’s possible for people to comment, but the problems with authentication make it really difficult. Even once you are logged in, the interface for commenting is sort of clunky, and I never found a way to make comments appear right below the posts (you had to click into another link to read them). This is something I would really like to improve.
  3. Meets Goal 3 with flying colors. Image galleries in the tiki wiki are simple to upload, navigate, and interact with. Creating new pages for different stuff is simple. There are a wide variety of modules that can do different things– I even used the ‘Quizzes’ module in conjunction with a class project once. Tikiwiki has built-in discussion forums, although, once again, they are not used that much. The extensibility of TW seems fairly limitless.
  4. Meets Goal 4 quite well. RSS works. Feeds generated automatically. I wasn’t able to nail down how to isolate a feed for one particular blog (versus ALL blogs), but that didn’t really change the user experience, as far as I know (most visitors would want to read all the blogs anyway).
  5. Meets Goal 5 to my satisfaction. The available themes aren’t fantastic, and the layout of the site itself isn’t exactly “beautiful”, but I think it’s easy on the eyes and simple to navigate.

Some other general comments about TikiWiki:

Now that I’ve worked with this format for some time, I’m pretty well equipped to know what its strengths and shortcomings are. TW is, as I mentioned, a fantastically extensible system for community generated content and interaction. When I first started using it, this was the direction that I thought the site could take– a web community of people in my life, who, theoretically, have a lot of things in common and would want to interact with one another.

Since that time, we’ve seen substantial growth of larger social-web-portals (like Facebook and MySpace), and the Googles and Yahoo!s of the world have expanded their capabilities within that realm, too. Simply stated, there’s not a good reason for people (even people I know) to come to my site for things other than reading the blog and checking out what’s new with me.

TW is also large enough that its administration can get sort of complex. I mentioned some of the minor issues that I’ve experienced with it, and I’m sure they would be solvable with some time and energy to put toward it. Quite honestly, I’m looking to put equal or less effort into site administration with comparable or greater results. I really want to be able to focus on content.

That brings up a larger question– why not just direct my URL to a Blogger page or something like that? The answer gets at another Goal for the site that I didn’t think of until now: I want the site contained within my own server, which lives at my own house. Blogging with Google or Yahoo! or somebody else might be really simple to do, but my data security paranoia won’t let me go there. And that’s not to mention the fact that there is just something more satisfying about being able to do it yourself.

OK, I think this is a good spot to begin.

Windows- Good for Some Things

Jen stopped by last night to pick up a CD while Michelle was making dinner and I was working on laundry. One of the things she mentioned is that the place is still not completely put together, and she speculated that my general ambivalence about living there is the problem.

That is true, in part.

The other part, to be completely honest, is the level of “computer-hobbying” that I’ve been doing at home ever since I moved to Milwaukee. Honestly, it is partly just a coincidence of timing– right about the time I got hired at UWM, I switched my daily use OS on the laptop over to Ubuntu. Linux is so flexible, and so many people are working on writing software and doing tweaks of this or that, it tends to make a geek want to experiment and try new things. Sometimes that means you break something and have to start over. Other times, it spurs you on to think of other things to try or to mess with.

In that sense, then, Windows is GREAT. Windows, as an operating system, is so boring and rigid and unchangeable, there’s really not much reason or influence to entertain yourself tweaking the system and messing around with it. Sure, you can (and I have) dick around with the way it looks, or you can hunt for free software, but eventually the computer is just a tool and there’s not much else to do with it. You turn it off and go do something else.

I have to get myself to do that more often, even though I’ve always got some new project I want to try. If I don’t, not only will my apartment never get completely set up, my thesis will never get completely written.
