Brain = Broken

I opened up this window because I thought I had something witty to say about my programming choices from last evening– when it turned out the Knitts wouldn’t be making it over for LOST, I stuck with National Geo instead and watched some thing about how the first humans in the Americas might not have come from Siberia across the Bering “land bridge.”

…At least there were some “new revelations” there.

But I ran out of gas and wound up reading about the Milwaukee Bucks sudden and random coaching transition instead. What a f-show.

Times like these, I sincerely wish that the Senator would just sell the team to the highest bidder, and let ’em move the Bucks to Vegas. The NBA (and this franchise in particular) is almost too stupid to even be in Milwaukee. That one year when the Big Three made a run at the East, it was a lot of fun, but you look at the past 20 years or so, it was an aberration. It kind of gets to be laughable that people like Larry Harris and Terry Stotts are even working at the jobs that they have (or recently had, in the case of the latter).

I dunno, maybe if I started telling people that I was the illegitimate son of Phil Jackson or something I could be a general manager in the NBA.

OK, back to it…

Report on the Basketballs and Whatnot

My basketball team had its regular-season-doubleheader-finale last night– we were supposed to have this 2-fer evening early in February, but a snow day @ Fond du Lac pushed it back to the “make-up week.”

Last week Monday, we got killed by the best team in our division, by something like 25 points. I mean, we were annihilated. We turned the ball over a LOT, and they must’ve scored 15-18 points on transition turnovers. It was pretty sad. By the last 5 minutes we were just chucking up 3s to try to get back in the game.

With that performance in mind, I fully expected to have a rough go of it playing two games in one night. But it was actually probably our best week of the season. We beat the “kids” in our first game (this team of all 19- and 20-yr-olds, a lot of them former students of my teacher peeps on the team), putting our season record against them at 1-2.

In our second game, we played that best team again, and it was a really close, hard-fought match all the way through. The difference, once again, was a couple stupid turnovers down the stretch in the first half that let them turn a 3-point deficit into a 3-point lead. They ended up winning by 3. We had a chance to take a 1-point lead with about 20 seconds to go, but the shot rimmed out. We missed a 3 at the buzzer that would’ve sent us to OT.

So it was a pretty good last night of hoops– come to find out it wasn’t actually the last night. Apparently, all 5 teams qualify for the “playoffs,” so we have play the kids again next week, and if we win that, we play the #1 team again the following week. There is at least one, and at most three weeks to go.

In my review of how that season went, I guess I wish our team would’ve had more time to sort of “get to know each other,” and play together more often. I think we could’ve been more successful if that were the case. I also feel I could’ve shook some more rust off my game personally if we practiced, or something.

I don’t really anticipate playing in an organized league for any sport again, but it was definitely interesting to try it as an adult and just see what that’s like (it’s like high school, but just hurts more).

Prepare for Your Weekend!!

First of all, I need to mention that THE NORDIC MOUNTAIN PEOPLE FOUND MY DAMN CAR KEY. HOLY LIVING CRAP. With that in mind, Michelle and I may make another run over there on Sunday if the weather’s OK. You wanna go?

Anyway, then last week I was listening the Brewers in spring training, and getting excited about the new baseball season, and I let my temptations get the best of me– I dug out my copy of the last MLB baseball game that EA Sports released (MVP Baseball 2005), which is not a particularly fantastic game, but it does let one run a “franchise” for up to 150 years, so I played the game this week. I played it too much, as usual (with the sports games in particular).

But, I had my fun, and now I’ve returned the CDs to my drawer at work, and it’s back to business at the homestead. Michelle is “staying in” this evening since she has to be up early for a cheer competition tomorrow, and that suits me just fine, since I was thinking of staying at home tonight anyway. Here’s my list of things I want or need to get done on Friday night:

– clean up all laundry
– clean up all dishes
– pick up the junk laying around the living room
– sort out/through ski clothing
– watch and return the current Netflixs
– scan in and shred some bills from the last month or so
– devise a plan for the balance of the weekend

There is a Bucks game on Saturday, and I haven’t been to the BC for one of those in almost 2 years. Is that right? I should ask Schneider, he’s great with calendars…

Oh, one other thing I think I’ll do, just to practice the technique, is to straight-euro-lace another pair or two of my shoes. It was the first hit on the Googles, so not a major “find” by any means, but I think this page is pretty neat. What are you doing with the Internet that’s useful or cool?

Finally, soloshootsfirst made me change my password today for the first time. Who knew? I hope I remember the new one…

Minor Miracles

Michelle and I got home from E.R. yesterday afternoon, and my laptop started back up like it wasn’t no thing. The hardware successfully PASSED all the system diagnostics.

I don’t get it, but I’ll take it.

Today’s walk to work was treacherous. There was about 2 inches of ice on top of the sidewalk pretty much all the way in. I was thankful to make it to work without falling once.

Then I opened the Internets this morning to find that Ahman Green now plays for the Houston Texans. Does anyone know if Randy Moss has ever run for 1,000 yards?

Technorrogy Good

I convinced myself to pony up the 15 bucks for unlimited online access to MLB gameday audio this season with this argument:
There’s no radio station carrying the Brewers up north, so we could still listen to Bob and Jim when we’re up by Mom and Dad.

So that works for me. I’m currently in the confines of my desk at work and happily listening to the Brewers’ TV team calling today’s game.

— Speaking of that: brewers.com had a live chat w/ the new TV guy (Brian Anderson, I think his name is), and in reading the transcript, he came off as a total douche. This is not the announcer’s fault, though; I think it’s the team’s fault for making him do one of those before he’s really familiar with the town or the team. He had a lot of canned, dipshit answers to questions. Basically, if you kept up with the news surrounding the Brewers over the winter (and anyone participating in a February chat definitely has), you had all the insight that he did.

As I listen to today’s game, though, he’s doing a good job. Seems on top of the action. Doesn’t *sound* like a douche…

It’s also fun to email the guys during the web-only broadcasts in spring. Smaller audience, more laid-back approach, also seems to encourage more interaction with the web-o-sphere.

I was over at Schrubbe’s the other day helping him run some cat5 for his new Xbox. I mentioned that of all the current generation consoles, the one I’d be most interested in is the Wii (pronounced ‘we’) from Nintendo. Then I read this review today, and I’m more certain than ever– I have to absolutely avoid purchasing one of these at all costs, because it would only be a time-waster for me. I still have enough old games to waste time on.

If you like me, please help by all means– if I ever mention buying a video game system to you, smack me upside the head and tell me to stop being such a hump.

Early to Bed, and All That Sorta Crap

I was reading a post from Lifehacker this morning, and while some of the linked tips therein have a greater application to people who are a lot busier during their days than I generally am, the idea of getting up early and having a productive morning made me think back to living in Bozeman.

Particularly in the spring of that year, even though I had no job and no place to be other than class twice a week in the evening, I tried very hard to get myself to bed at 10 every night, and I got up around 5 every morning. I remember feeling really good about waking up, and there’s no doubt that I felt more creative and productive when I got a jump on things.

I’m thinking that I might have time for more interesting blogging first thing in the AM (shrugs). It’s worth a shot anyway, so I’ll try to keep you up to date and let you know how it goes…

Couple Misc. Notes:
– Super Bowl was pretty lame. It was interesting through the first half, but the Bears D really wore down as the game went on (prolly had something to do with the fact the offense couldn’t stay on the field– I’m looking at you, Rex). Joe and April came over, though, and we had Randy Balls, pizza, and grilled cheese sam’iches.
– I helped Michelle file her taxes, but I screwed something up and she’s actually due another 160 bucks or so. We’ll have to put through an amendment.
– Michelle really likes the idea of being able to easily share you camera-phone pics on the web, so she set herself up a Flickr acct yesterday, too. Only a couple pics so far, but watch for more: http://www.flickr.com/photos/stuck2thefloor

Well, Good for the Tuna…

This absolutely idiotic story over at MickeySports has earned my biggest eye-roll of the day.

When do you think Parcells will knock off the bullshit and just tell it like it is:
“Yes, I’m really going to retire from coaching– until I decide to come back again.”

It’s like he’s playing the real-life version of Madden ’04: in ‘franchise’ mode, if you turned off the ‘owner’ features, you could hop from team to team every year if you wanted to, re-building, de-building, trading, drafting, and basically forming the entire league however you saw fit.*

I first picked this story up from the AP wire, and I guess it sort of floors me that they have it framed like this will “really be it” this time. At least ESPN has a note about how Parcells has “retired” 3 times before. Who knows? Maybe we’ll see him in Oakland next year. The only NFL owner possibly more obnoxious than Jerry Jones, after all, is Al Davis.

* – I can remember being in the throes of a particularly severe Madden addiction some time during 2004, and saying to myself on the eve of a simulated conference championship weekend 10 or 15 years in the game’s future: Hey: I’ve coached all 4 of these teams…

Makin Lists

Hey.

Help me remember all the stuff I have to get done this week before heading out on the road with Michelle for a week.

Today I did all the laundry that I had around the house. I went shopping for another pair of shorts (I have a few that are pretty old and ratty and need to be disposed of). I cleaned out the car, took out all the crap that was laying in the trunk, re-packed only the stuff I’ll need, and I started a list of things I need to take so I can pack tomorrow.

I was pretty pissed at the end of the Brewers game today. Seems to me that there are certain areas where the team is obviously falling short, and if don’t pick it up, or make a move or three to turn things around, the season’s gonna be a wash. It seems weird, though, to be thinking about being all upset that the Brewers are falling behind in the playoff race.

Anyway, my GF is on the phone, so I better take this. Talk to you tomorrow.
